We have launched the third edition of the campaign Inspiring Lights. We light up the retina.
This initiative was born in the heart of Extremadura, in a village called Fuente del Maestre, when Purificación Zambrano Gómez, who is affected by retinitis pigmentosa, had the idea on World Retina Day 2021 to ask the town hall to light up its façade.
At that time, there were no official colors representing retinal diseases. She chose blue and green.
That day, without knowing it, the campaign we now call Inspiring Lights was born.
In 2023, FARPE supported the idea as a way to raise awareness of inherited retinal dystrophies. Thanks to Puri and with the help of the other associations that make up FARPE, 80 municipalities across Spain lit up their most iconic buildings on World Retina Day.
In 2024, a total of 159 municipalities joined the Inspiring Lights campaign — 70 more than in 2023.
Moreover, people affected by these conditions, as well as the municipalities themselves, shared images on social media using the hashtag #lucesqueinspiran.
In 2025, we aim not only to increase the number of Spanish municipalities participating in the campaign, but also to expand beyond our borders with the support of international organizations. For this reason, this year we will ask people to share on social media using two hashtags: #inspiringlights and #lucesqueinspiran
